DLC Paint Out, Day One, 7:00 am: This photo of me was taken while I painted the iconic view of Larkspur Butte and Pikes Peak from the south rim of JA Ranch in Douglas County. We had to get out early to capture the morning light and to avoid the 95+ degree temps. JA Ranch incorporates a large mesa east of Larkspur, and the views from the top are spectacular. The owner opens her property for many events in support of the DLC.
DLC Paint Out, Day Four: This is my rough plein air painting-in-progress of the red barn at Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation's Lowell Ranch, a working agricultural education center located south of Castle Rock, CO along Plum Creek. The CALF ranch is an historic landmark and was donated by longtime ranchers John and Bea Lowell to preserve a piece of rural life in the suburbs and promote ag education. A large cow escaped from it's pen while I was painting, but the teen in charge of it easily caught her and led her back to her home. Three adult freshly-shorn sheep walked past as well. A group of elementary school kids appeared and toured the animal enclosures with a teenage leader. Lowell is a very busy place!
Art Critics - On the outskirts of the CALF Lowell Ranch this ewe and her lamb saw me painting nearby a fence and rushed across the pasture to greet me. I think they were expecting that I might have some kind of treat, and they baaing persistently. After finding no food, they departed for greener pastures.
